i have very long, really curly hair. my problen tho is not the length or the curls its that i cant keep my hair from going all fuzzy and bushy when its loose.
i'v tried conditioners and waxes and all sorts of strange things. because my hair is also very thick i always leave in my conditioner otherwise i cant brush it. i was even told not to brush my hair because its so thick and curly but that was just a horrible mess!!
how do i keep my corkscrew curls in place?
now that its winter i'd love to wear my hair loose more often but cant because it always looks like it is trying to attack the person next to me.

I had extremely curly and unruly hair as a child. My mother gave me dog brushes to use to comb my hair in the morning as only strong brushes would make a dent in my curls. When I became a teenager I learned more about hair. Hair is made up of protein. When heat is applied to protein it can be shaped. If this is done regularly and over time, hair can be trained to lay in any direction you like. A hair dryer or curling iron and a good strong brush, preferably from a beauty supply store, is what is required. It took me a year to finally train my hair to lay where I wanted. I am now able to just brush my hair right out of the shower without using a hair dryer. Just be aware that although heat will train your hair it can also damage it. Regular use of conditioners and occasional use of cholesterol will help fix any heat damage. Good luck!

Honestly, you can maybe get some advice here, but none of us can see your hair. My first thought is to go to a professional, a nice salon, something like that. Then ask the hairdresser there, what the best plan for your hair would be. Maybe just cutting it differently would help too, or maybe they'll have some good ideas, because they really know what they're doing.
In any case, best of luck. ^_^

never ever brush your curls out! if you brush out your curls, your hair will just get even more and more frizzy. But if you really need to fix up your hair, try just maybe using your hands as a sort of brush...getting rid of tangles etc.
when you have newly washed hair, its best to leave your hair to dry naturally...and always make sure you use lots of conditioner to reduce the dryness and frizzy bits.

I have exactly the same problem and unfortunately i've never found a cure. If i wear my hair out i straighten it, usually though I find it too inconvinient to wear out (it totally gets in the way). I don't shampoo my hair at all and it helps a bit, shampooing just makes it puffy and stupid, its already shiny i don't even need to shampoo. Try just going without washing it for a while, see if that helps you a bit. Good luck if you live in a humid environment like me, you'll need it. I recently visited a much dryer place and my hair was very nice, the humidity though..aaaahhh!!

In my 1/4 century of curlyness I find the enemies to be dryness and missing a good combing. At all times have moist (not wet) and well combed hair.
Creative haircuts lots of fine-tooth combing hairbrushing tying the suckers down at night and salon quality hair gel (no alchohol). Thats what I do now. Make sure the gel gets everywhere not just the surface. (Fine-tooth comb helps here)
You coud try an afro-american store, they have 'treatments' which are really strong chemicals that break down the 'curliness'. The longer you leave the 'treatment' in the straighter the hair gets but if you quickly wash it out as soon as you put it in you wont end up with any damage or over straightening. The hair gets less curly but more managable and it begins to learn whos boss. After a few months of the treatment it stays manageble for fear of future 'treatments'. Pavlovian conditioning for hair.....
