Keeping my curly hair CURLY?

I have naturally curly hair. I'm fine with it, but I feel that I need to add in some product so that it's not so frizzy when it dries. Lately, I've been using mousse and not liking the results because it turns my thick curls into thin fake-looking waves. HELP! what am I doing wrong?

For forums where people with curls discuss what has worked for them and give advice that may be more relevant to your specific length and texture and for product reviews specifically for curly hair, http://www.naturallycurly.com/ is an excellent resource.

A mousse can be very tricky. Some have alcohol, some don't. Some have polymers that leave a lot of residue and others wash out just fine. Some stand up to humidity, some don't.

Something I've found handy for a basically natural look but with less frizz is Activateur by Mastey (a search will turn it up). It can make wavy hair curly but for those of us who are already curly, it mainly makes for better behaved curls. It's very light and not stiff or sticky and it washes out easily. (Hair geek stuff: the polyquaternium-10 and the dimethicone actually work together so you get more shine but it washes out easier than dimethicone normally does.)

The Moisture line of Mastey shampoos and conditioners has been excellent for my hair.

A few other curl tips:

if you blow-dry use cold air and a diffuser

if you towel dry, pat the hair dry, don't rub. A superabsorbent microfiber towel like those made by Aquis will help.

to detangle, use a wide tooth comb, preferably hand carved and made of anti-static materials. NuBone is a good brand.

All these approaches will minimize static build up as well as breakage. And a conditioner like the Mastey ones, that is free of oils and silicones but loaded with natural humectants will help your hair maintain it's moisture balance, which also reduces frizziness.

Hope one or more of these tips helps.

Good luck!

Someone suggested smoothing serum. There's good and bad in that idea. First, these are loaded with silicones and will build up if you don't regularly use a clarifying shampoo. Second, they're good for very coarse, thick curls or waves, but on fine curls, they may leave your hair weighed down and limp. I suspect that may also be what your mousse is doing. And regardless, less is more with such products.

use anti frizz cream or serum. garnier fructis smoothing milk and anti frizz serum work wonders for my wavy, would-be frizzy hair.
