Highlights for curly hair...?

So i have dark brown curly hair and want to get it highlighted...

Last time i went with blond and after a while it looked HORRIBLE cause the color went ashy and burned after a short while...im assuming most light colors won't work cause my hair is really dark ! I have white skin btw and any suggestions??

Id say get highlights that are a simmilar colour like a lighter brown and a medium brown to bring out your natural curl and colour as itl give different textures and defination without looking like youve died it every colour of the rainbow lol :0)
