What to do with my curly hair?

Speaking from the experience of helping my daughter, who has an amazing amount of hair and it is extremely curly on top of being very thick.

The steps that I am listing below are what works for her, I will also list some suggestions from her hair stylist:

* products she likes are pomeades (don't use too much!) and calming frizz creams. She really likes the Aveda pomeade (in a blue jar). She uses shampoos that are for "shine" or for "straightening or smoothing" and a good conditioner! She also uses a hairspray (Aussie) for humidity control.

* A good paddle brush and a good large round brush are her staples for brushes and she doesn't keep brushing throughout the day and really tries to keep her hands out of her hair! A tourmaline hairdryer (high-ends will run well over $150, you can find a good one for around $50), ion/tourmaline/ceramic straightening iron, (she has a revlon one the ran about $30, we bought her a CHI one for Christmas (ebay) for around $90.

* she tries NOT to wash her hair daily, depending how much products she has in her hair. she also runs track on Tues/Thurs, so those days she must wash. on the weekends she tends to lighten up on the hair washing.

* when she dries her hair, she gets it to the point of just barely damp, then starts using her paddle brush or round brush to pull the curl out, until her hair is dry. she follows with the flat iron and will finish with a small amount of pomeade at night. she always straightens the night before, never in the morning. the next morning, she will do touch-ups only, she swears this makes it look more natural. and again, follows with a small amount of pomeade.

* Also, a satin pillowcase was her nana's tip, it keeps her hair from knotting and keeps it looking really straight.

Her stylist says when you use the pomeade, warm it up in your hand, rub your hands together! Start with a dime size, for medium to thick hair and increase only if you need more, this stuff can really weigh your hair down and make it look greasy! Get regular haircuts (6wks) for the ends! If you want your hair thinned make sure someone who knows about curly hair knows how much to thin out, if it's too much it will "poof" the hair. Also, if you have really curly hair watch your haircut! Too short will start looking like a triangle on your head. If you wear your hair curly, use a diffuser on your dryer and don't forget to put a little hair products in, it will help keep the hair from looking frizzy and seperate too much. Don't forget to dry at the roots (hang your head down if you can, keep it from looking really flat on top and too curly on the bottom.

Good luck!
