First and foremost you need a really good hair cut. Long layers works well for me, but discuss the options with your stylist.

Second, only use shampoo about once a week, but use conditioner once a day. Personally, I cannot over-condition my hair. I use conditioner in the shower, plus a leave in conditioner and I use a deep conditioner once a week.

Finally, find a product that works for you. There are a lot of gels and mousses out there for curly hair. I also find that the ones for sleek or shiny hair work well on my hair too. Experiment to find what works for you. Right now I'm using got2be curl-vacious.

You should straighten it

If you want to wear it in a ponytail, here's what I do to get a great slick look; using a manucure brush (made to scrub under nails) I slick my hair from the edges to the ponytail holder. The product I slick it with is called Tea Tree Styling Wax by Paul Mitchell. Its in the mens grooming section but I use it too. It has shine, holds like super glue, but does not dry like styling gel does. And I can comb my hair out without it hurting afterwards. Another thing you can try is to wet set your hair on VERY large rollers (Sally beauty supply has them, red 1 1/2", grey are 2" in circumference, black 3") at night and when you take them out in the morning, you will have loose sexy waves.
