How do you get sleek, straight hair from curly, slightly poofy hair?

I have dirty blonde, slighty-poofy naturally curly hair. It's not extremely curly, but rather has...loose curls. It's rather annoying, as it isn't the gorgeous curls that some girls have. My hair is also naturally thick and slightly poofy. It used to be longer, but I didn't like how it poofed out at the bottom so I cut it to about shoulder-length now, and have stopped using a straightening iron because it completely trashed the ends.

Now I want to straighten my hair again, but don't want to make it look dull and lifeless again. I already use Sunsilk Straighten Up shampoo, conditioner, and 24/7 cream. It doesn't work much. I don't blowdry my hair because I heard that makes it MORE poofy, but then I've also heard that your hair will be straight if you blowdry it straight. Which of these is true?

Lastly, HOW do I get rid of the poofiness? This is the most important part of this question. The poofiness, I HATE it. Are there any specific thinning products anyone knows?

Thanks all.

There's a bunch of different options you can take.

For one, I highly recommend purchasing John Frieda's FrizzEase ... it works magic! :) To moisturize and help tame the frizz, you might also want to try some home remedies. Try cracking a couple of eggs, whisking them, and massaging them into your hair for a mask - let sit for 30 minutes or so. Then rinse. Your hair will feel silky smooth and temporarily tame some of the craziness. This works with mayo also. They may not smell fabulous, but it works.

This next option is a bit more pricey, but it will save you the hassle in the long run. Ask your hairdresser if she is able to chemically straighten your hair! If she can't, opt to find someone near you who can. You hair will be silky and straight for at least 3-4 months.

Lastly, the best hair straightener to get for your type of hair would be a Chi. They are wonderful, but overuse can cause heat damage to the hair and lots of split ends.

Get a hair iron and when blow drying (if you still need to) use a brush to hold it straight (under tension).

Rebonding is the answer. it costs a bit expensive but it lasts from 6 to 12 months so its worth it.

You can have it thinned out or razored by a stylist. Also, you should invest in a good straightener. It shouldn't "trash" the ends if it is a good quality and you are getting a regular trim.

Get some straightening serum/gel of any type and put it in your hair when its wet, after shampooing. Then part your hair into sections and blowdry using a round brush. Make sure your hair is completely dry in each section before moving on to the next. This makes my hair pin straight and not poofy at all, and I have SUPER curly hair. Good Luck!!

I use the conair wet 2 straight straightener (Wal-mart under 30$... First I shower towel dry my hair and spray in then I spray in John Frieda Collection- Frizz-Ease Straight Answer (You can get at Wal-mart for less than like 5 bucks) then I straighten my hair. I straighten my hair while it's still damp to make sure I got everything and when I'm done my hair likes flat and sleek and shiny looking. I havent found anything that has worked as good as that straight answer but I also really like Herbal Essences straight answer or something like that it comes in a pinkish bottle it's straighting spray also. But I hope I helped! Good Luck!

You could:

1. Embrace your curls. I have naturally curly hair too, and I used to hate it because I wasn't styling it right. You need to have the right shampoo/ gel and find a technique that fits your hair type

2. Straighten it, but not everyday. I go back and forth wearing my hair curly and straight, and I find this helps with damage. Personally, I think Sunsilk sucks. I use Herbal Essences Dangerously Straight shampoo, conditioner, and the mousse. Put the mousse in your hair when it's damp, not soaking wet. Then blowdry and straighten it.

It's all about finding the right hair cut that suits your hair type and getting into the right routine. Your hair stylist might be able to help you out even more.

Hope all this helps :)

I would suggest that you go to a salon and have a Japanese straightening performed on your hair. I don't know how much it costs here in the US, but I'm sure your could get an estimate. I had one done in March and I had fantastic results. Though you'll need to use a blow dryer to dry your hair to maintain it straight in the way you desire. As for the poofiness maybe you should ask at a salon.

okay well i used to have your same problem. what i did was i went and got it thined at the sallon and yuo have to go buy a inch straitener and a two inch make sure their good and always strighten and blowdry your hair cuz in most cases it will look like you didnt even try.

How do you get sleek, straight hair from curly, slightly poofy hair?

my hair is like yours. Whenever i wash my hair, i use dove shampoo, i tried others, but dove works the best. After the shower, while my hair is not soaking wet but still wet, i put on Special Effects Hair Graffiti, Straight Arrow. This protects it from getting fried when you straighten it. Wait until your hair is damp, then brush it so its straight. After its dry i tie up half my hair so its easier to straighten. I use InfraShine, A high performance straightening iron. It takes me 15-20 minutes to do my hair, but its worth it in the end!

For the poofness, i would either use a de-poof spray after you put on the straight arrow.

How do you get sleek, straight hair from curly, slightly poofy hair?

I know exactly what you're talking about...my hair is exactly the same way- extremely thick and slightly curly. I usually put a serum in my hair (paul mitchell from the hair salon or sunsilk - the blue one for de-poofing hair as it dries) and then I use a straightener and straighten in it in sections. If you blow dry your hair, do it the same way- in sections. Starting with the bottom layer first.

You can buy anti-frizz gels...

How do you get sleek, straight hair from curly, slightly poofy hair?

Okay, if you go to Sally Beauty Supply there is a line called ION. There is a spray product to protect your hair from the heat from straighting irons. I really does. I iron my hair almost daily and it works. It also works great when I keep my hair curly to keep it from getting poofy. It wasn't meant for that but it works!

http://www.sallybeauty.com/ion-anti-friz...

I have tried other heat protectants or anti frizz products and this is the only one I have found not to gum up my iron and also really works to keep my hair silky straight.

My hair is just like yours. Not super curly, but annoyingly wavy...and very poofy if not ironed.

I have blown dry my hair then done a quick iron over it for a fuller but still flat look. Otherwise I usually let my hair dry over night, then iron in the morning. That's when it's really flat.

Good Luck!

How do you get sleek, straight hair from curly, slightly poofy hair?

Alright you have a blonde version of my hair.

First off, don't use sunsilk, that stuff is crap.

Professional hairstylists say that the ultimate BEST cheapest shampoo and conditioner to use is Suave.

Next, Since Sunsilk was crappy for you, you still need to use a different cream that will protect you from the heat. Even if you're not straightening it you probably plan on blowdrying it. These heat tools will damage your hair and make it look lifeless without a proper heat protection cream. Personally, I think you get the best deal with L'Oreal Starighten up Cream.

As for poofiness, straightening will help!

Yes, blowdrying will make it worse, which is why I let my hair dry over night. If it comes down to it put the blowdryer on "low".

As for blowdrying it straight, well that only works for people with naturally straight hair or wavy hair.

Last you need to invest in a good straightner.

Anyone will work just fine.

Also, cutting your hair shorter will make it look even more poffy and thick.

Hope this helps. =]

How do you get sleek, straight hair from curly, slightly poofy hair?

Certain people cannot blowdry their hair straight because brushes make their hair worse. Invest in a good flat iron with ceramic plates. For cases like yours, you really get what you pay for (something from WalMart isn't going to cut it).

Try getting your hair thinned a little at the stylists to make it more manageable. Then, after you shower, wrap hair in a microfiber towel to remove excess moisture. Then spray in a heat protectant (Thermasilk's is nice) and then coat your hair in straightening serum (Frizz-Ease is good). Then flat iron in sections; this way, you limit the amount of heat and still ensure a good result.

And don't wash your hair as often. On days you don't wash, just put your hair under a showercap, and mist it with leave-in conditioner.
